A silly, pretentious instructional video I made for Prof. James Gardner’s Sight & Sound: TV course, where I write a fugue based on the theme from Britney Spear’s “Oops I Did It Again”. By popular request, you may now find the sheet music here: groups.google.com … Britney Spears Oops Did It Again NYU Film TV Television Documentary Instructional Daniel Pi Danny Dan Fugue Bach

This would really be very good if you cut out around five sixths of it and just played the fugue.

This is truly inspired and enjoyable. Thanks for posting it. Great intro and outro music selections — The Swingle Singers & Walter/Wendy Carlos? I must say that the multitudes might appreciate a more digestible edit that excludes most of 1:42 – 3:25. The point is made within a few seconds. When the mix of narrations overlap, they soon become incomprehensible — and not musical.

Is it just a video’s fault or is that piano really that sharp?
I really liked the three person fugue. hahaha!

Mmm… not really, no. Cantus firmus isn’t really the right thing to be thinking of here, anyway. I mean, in some Schenkarian sense, there’s always a cantus firmus, but fugues aren’t really built around it. You’re thinking of species counterpoint. Too complicated to explain in a youtube comment. I would suggest you find Kent Kennan’s book on counterpoint. That has very good explanations of contrapuntal forms. A book on pure counterpoint is generally not going to explain practical fugue-writing.

So what do you do? You start out the cantus firmus at D minor then you just hit notes in D minor that correspond with the A major cantus firmus? I know you can do different things but I’m new to this so any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I

Yes. The entrance of the middle voice was in A major (the dominant), and the entrance of the bass was in D minor (the tonic). The entrance of the top voice was also in D minor.

Just out of curiosity, did you play the bass in minor and the alto in major?

The detached notes are a stylistic choice. When you leave space between notes, it makes the texture more transparent, and you can “hear through” the lines. Listen to Koroliov, Gulda, Tureck, and (of course) Gould playing Bach. Almost everything is detaché. I find that trying to play each voice in a fugue as a “singing line” ends up making the texture muddy and incoherent. Yes, it’s a joke fugue, and yes, I didn’t put much effort into it, but I wouldn’t change the articulation if I had.

This is hilarious. Excellent job. When you went to two voices in one hand, you started playing a lot of detached notes, which to me broke the singing line. Anyway, I know it’s just a joke so you probably don’t care.

right you are. sorry, it was early in the morning for me. well then, in that case, you should make it more diminished.
