Thompson is a great guitarist and all but c’mon man. He needs to show some skin for this tune!

@2010mstamara
Sorry, but an auto-tune studio voice doesn’t count. “Good vocal artist”? When?

wow . . . . . Nice

I love this! Richard has made such wonderful music through the years. I grew up on a steady diet of the Beatles and Fairport Convention, thanks to my dad. Dad told me (can’t believe I’m relating this) that he once stood next to Richard Thompson in a rest room while at the urinals.. Some small club in Columbus, Ohio. Nicely done, and thanks for posting this!

@2010mstamara Thompson didn’t criticize the music. He called the song “crass.” And if “a pop song carefully calculated to market a teenage girl by crafting her into a very particular male fantasy” doesn’t count as crass, the word has no meaning.

@WestwoodTheOaf Just by the way, Max Martin and Rami Yacoub are musicians as well, as are the rest of the people who created this song. Britney is a good vocal artist– her contribution was her voice. I don’t understand the obsession with singers singing “their own” music– I think at times putting together a team of the best talent of each element of a song produces an incredible final product, but it is disregarded just because Britney didn’t write it. Hers isn’t the only name on the record.

I prefer Britney. This is good too. I just don’t like it when people pretentiously claim that pop music isn’t real music. There were many talented musicians who put effort into producing the original “Oops,” including Britney, the writers, and the post-production team among others. Why should this be any less legitimate than Richard’s efforts here? Mainstream does not equate bad. Unfortunately, I found that a lot of the more subtle and really beautiful harmonies were lost in this version.

@EddyMorino And that’s the power of RIchard Thompson. You may now pull a Wayne’s World (“We’re not worthy! We’re not worthy!”)

Just heard this on Harry Shearer’s NPR show last night and thought it was awesome!
There was no intro so it took me about 30 seconds to realize what he was singing.
It’s actually a great song when an actual musician sings it.

screw britany spears for her one thumbs down…..haha

When i went to see 1000 Years of Popular Music, he played The Pussycat Doll’s Maneater, which doesnt really work as that song is from the new millenium.

@jpgr6270 r u saying the song isnt listenable?
March 3rd, 2012 at 11:26 am
Thompson’s version is amazing, but I don’t agree with the top comments. I’m not into Brittany Spears’ version, but think about how the song was composed. She had, when this song was written, some of the smartest and well trained composers making songs for her. They designed the song to be catchy, but musically engaging as well.

KILLED IT

Hey Nana-Richard Thompson is a musical icon. Briney is an entertainer. BIG difference.
