Cantus firmus isn’t really the right thing to be thinking of here, anyway. I mean, in some Schenkarian sense, there’s always a cantus firmus, but fugues aren’t really built around it. You’re thinking of species counterpoint. Too complicated to explain in a youtube comment. I would suggest you find Kent Kennan’s book on counterpoint. That has very good explanations of contrapuntal forms. A book on pure counterpoint is generally not going to explain practical fugue-writing.

When you leave space between notes, it makes the texture more transparent, and you can “hear through” the lines. Listen to Koroliov, Gulda, Tureck, and (of course) Gould playing Bach. Almost everything is detaché. I find that trying to play each voice in a fugue as a “singing line” ends up making the texture muddy and incoherent. Yes, it’s a joke fugue, and yes, I didn’t put much effort into it, but I wouldn’t change the articulation if I had.
