Tori Amos covers Britney Spears’ “Baby One More Time” at the Paramount Theater in Oakland on July 13 2009. I combined the video posted by lindseymero with the better quality audio posted by robertschrader.

say what you will about britney, but this is a damn amazing song…a piece of pop perfection. and tori shows the dark side of the lyrics to it beautifully.

what was tori’s reaction to the Joni mitchell? The hair on her body? Was that in reference to that.. or.??

@AndrewA1988 Except Britney started to have her voice more heavily processed in 2008. Suck it.

Amazing.

This is awesome.

Wow….she really can do it all…

I think she chose this song because the lyrics are emotionally fucked up and then Britney got really sick and doesn’t get a break from the cameras and Tori feels sorry for what she had to go through.

I’m so sick of people bashing Britney Spears honestly she wasn’t autotunned in this song and back in the day she sang it live and she co- wrote the song you’re all enjoying right now. Honestly just give the girl the respect she deserves.

@lutalice – you’re right. I must have inferred that part from something else entirely. But Tori did say that Maybe California is about maternal suicide and a struggling economy. The song is written from the perspective that she’s trying to offer hope to any wife or mother who might be considering suicide.

@informatist i really dont think its about spousal abuse!!

“I don´t know any of the fucking songs I play”… genius.

not a cover,, ut a transformation
October 8th, 2011 at 10:19 am
It’s important to note that she used this song as a sort segue into “Maybe California” which she wrote about suicide, spousal abuse, empty nest syndrome and a struggling economy.

It really shouldn’t surprise anyone that Tori chose to cover this song… She makes a subtle mockery not of Britney Spears, but rather of the fans who bob their heads without really absorbing the lyrics… The song is truly perverse in every way that pop music can be and only Tori’s signature style can call attention to that fact. Revisit her cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and the picture is complete.

Tori is genius
October 8th, 2011 at 10:19 am
@RevivingRichelle She uses it all the time … with her left foot.
October 8th, 2011 at 10:19 am
She is so good at covers…nearly always better than the original. Talent and emotion, love her
October 8th, 2011 at 10:19 am
she’s incredible.
October 8th, 2011 at 10:19 am
I love this!
October 8th, 2011 at 10:19 am
Does she not use the sustain petal? I never see her use it and i don’t know how she can get the piano to sound like that without using it.

I was expecting a disaster with this, and as always, Tori delivers something that is fucking genius!!! Blows the original away!
October 8th, 2011 at 10:19 am
The lyrics so much suit Tori’s emotional performance…
October 8th, 2011 at 10:19 am
I wonder if she can do this kind of thing with Friday…
October 8th, 2011 at 10:19 am
DAMN….. she just owned her own song in front of millions of people. YOU GO TORI!!!

@mariaradu1
Love Travis, but I gotta disagree, her arrangement changes the song in tone and meaning, and gave it this depth I didn’t think was possible.
