That wasn’t the point of Craig’s story. The point is thatï»¿ alcohol wasn’t his problem, it was his solution. Unfortunately for us alcoholics, the solution itself becomes a problem. If you treat the underlying problem, the solution (alcohol) goes away.

No it’s not that you have to have those thoughts, and I used to say that very same thing you just did. But when I couldn’t get a job after trying to quit working in bars and applyï»¿ at so many places that wouldn’t hire me and then tried getting jobs at bars again looking for an excuse to maybe get free drinks, you realize that there’s no future, you cry privately at home, you get depressed, then the suicide thoughts start up. I know this, I lived it..it will get to that unfortunately.

If you read Craig’s autobiography, there was much more behind this than just alcohol. I think at this time, he had already had one failed marriage, drug problems,ï»¿ he’d been a musician. He really had a pretty turbulent life. Not to say that any of that should lead everyone to jump off a bridge, but for certain people it could definitely be enough. I was just in awe of Craig after reading American on Purpose.

Craig -Thanks for helping my recovery … I used to think that I could only be funny when I was drinking … I was very funny …but I never knew when to stop drinking. .. and then it wasn’t funny at all. My wife along with my friends from college and work did an intervention (she had readï»¿ – “How to Stop the One You Love from Drinking” by Mary Ellen Pinkham) That was June 2, 1990. I take it one day at a time with help from others.

Craig is my hero. I heard him say in a stand up one time that he was an alcoholic. It made it easier for me to admit that I was too. Because maybe someone as funny and happy as Craig can live without alcohol I might be able to as well. I am a friend of Bills for 32 days today. One day at a time and a good future to look forwardï»¿ to. Thank you Craig.

Awesome story. However for me, I drink and drink everyday, yet I don’t have any suicidal thoughtsï»¿ or distaste for the world. Why is being an alcoholic coincide with being depressed and damaging to yourself and others?
